Effectiveness versus Efficiency

How often do we hear these two words uttered in the same breadth or written in the same sentence? Some of us think that they are synonyms however, whilst they can be complimentary, they are not the same. The differences are important, particularly in the context of an organisation aiming to be successful. The definitions we find work best are:

> Efficiency - Doing things right

In the above diagram effectiveness is determined by the organisation strategic direction, typically set by owners and executive management. It is then, that organisational capability needs to align to the higher level direction through the efficient use of resources.

It is at the efficiency or 'doing things right' part of the organisational capability model, as it relates to employees, where the Cambron software has a major influence.

Behaviours

Behaviours, attitudes, traits and culture are those difficult to define aspects of employee feelings towards their work. These are often elusive to measure, nevertheless, they have a major influence on organisational efficiency and can't be ignored. The HR Manager software is extremely flexible in the way it seeks to influence this challenging area. It is able to target individuals or larger groups within the same organisation using diverse strategies to tackle cultural issues.

Goal Alignment

Ensuring that there is a nexus between a position description, business plan and an overall strategic plan would seem to be common sense. Yet very few organisations are able to demonstrate the link. Cambron has a simple method of assigning objectives to employees and ensuring work plans and position descriptions are easily accessible. Up to date reports and charts at detailed and summary levels make it easy to monitor progress and set useful KPIs. Development & Training

Development and training should largely be derived from employee goals and desired behaviours.  Therefore, it is logical that employee development, both completed and planned, reside in the same database as goals and behaviours. This serves to constantly reinforce the need to sensibly target training that matches both employee and organisational requirements. 

This is the area that our clients see the most easily measured benefit from our software through significant savings in better planned training and development of employees. We suspect that there are even greater savings being made as the hidden leakages in undesirable behaviour and non aligned work practices are progressively resolved.

Direction & Feedback

Effective management and support cannot occur unless employees and their team leaders, supervisors or managers take the time to discuss what is required and how it is to be achieved. Rather than the software stifling discussion, it has proved to be a catalyst to encourage it. Employees actively maintain their own training records and work objectives on a regular basis then seek their supervisor's endorsement.
